This was a project executed within a six week timeframe for my third module of my MA in Game Art at Escape Studios. With the primary focus being VFX, the brief was to create a cinematic trailer that would tell a story within the environment. The story is set in a research facility around a harsh snowy region, where human scientists are researching and developing a teleporter with the intent of teleportation to other areas. The interior of the facility consisted of two primary sections, a research room with living quarters and the main teleporter room. The research room plays a pivotal role in the narrative of the story, mainly for research notes, prototypes of portals that the scientists were developing for tests, a holotable displaying a hologram of the design of the teleporter mainframe. I used Quixel Megascans, some asset packs from the Epic Games marketplace to establish and construct the environment.
- Created a variety of Material shaders to support the environment and the Niagara VFX , as well as have control over them using Material instances/setups
- Animated materials were created to breath life and minor functionality to specifc assets (Control terminal, scanner, signs, text, etc)
- Making use of sprite sheets and flipbooks created in Photoshop, to add variety to particle effects for the portal, snow, etc.
- Using dynamic parameters in Niagara, I was able to control the opacity/spawning of the individual portal effects, laser beam and have them trigger at a specific time in the video sequence. The video sequence also required a Niagara component/FX system in order to activate or deactivate the effect in the timeline.
All VFX, lighting, video, editing, set dressing was done by me. The video was created using Unreal engine sequencer and edited inside of Adobe Premiere Pro. Thanks for viewing.
